Many homeowners are unprepared against the risk of flood damage to their property, Zurich has found.

Research carried out by the financial services group found that nearly half (44 per cent) of the population may be unaware of how far their home insurance cover will extend in terms of protection for flood damage.

Meanwhile, 40 per cent said they were unsure where they should go to get advice about how to reduce their exposure to severe weather.

However, Zurich claimed that this was not because of a lack of concern, as 62 per cent of respondents said that they felt that there was a heightened risk of flooding in today's climate.

Commenting on the findings, Anna Fleming, property claims director at Zurich, explained: "While there's clearly an increased level of concern about flooding, our research shows that many people still don't seem to believe it could happen to them."

Elsewhere, research by the Fair Investment Company published last month showed that 38 per cent of people do not have home cover, despite an increased risk of severe weather.
