A significant number of Britons are carrying out home improvements or even moving to a better area because they are suffering from status anxiety about their property, according to a new survey.
Research undertaken by Standard Life Bank revealed that two thirds of Britons in their 30s and 40s are anxious about whether or not their home looks good and is located in the right place.
In a bid to stop this anxiety, around one in ten plans to move home in the coming year, while more than half say they will be renovating their property or carrying out home improvements.
"Many people in their 30s and 40s are living very full, busy lives which means that wholesale changes are very difficult to manage comfortably," commented Benjamin Fry, consumer psychologist and host of the BBC's Spendaholics.
He added: "There becomes a trade off between their aspirations and the time, money and stress that it would take to achieve them.
"Upgrading what they have can therefore become the perfect solution to finding some balance between personal ambitions and quality of life; if the goal is a happier life, it is important to be smart about the overall picture while striving to achieve that."
