New research has revealed that many UK homes may have undervalued their home contents insurance, NFU Mutual has reported.

Close to a quarter of all homeowners have never reviewed their levels of home contents insurance, according to the survey from NFU Mutual.

Despite the increase in expensive items such as plasma screens televisions, many homeowners are forgetting to review their insurance policies to see whether they remained covered.

In London, 30 per cent of all homeowners have not reviewed their insurance cover.

Just over a fifth of those who had not renewed their insurance said it was because it was simpler to retain the same level of cover, whereas 18 per cent said they were not even aware that their home insurance should be reviewed.

"As well as annually, other good times to review your level of cover could be when you make a large purchase, move house, begin living with someone or after a milestone event like a wedding," said Laura Wood, a spokesperson for NFU Mutual.
