The UK's first ever Garage Safety Week is to take place in May, it has been announced.

Following on from the success of a similar week in the US, refurbishment company GarageTek is bringing garage safety awareness to the UK.

The aim of the week is to promote garage safety among UK homeowners and how to avoid hazards in the nine million garages around the country.

Alastair Broom, managing director of GarageTek UK, said: "The garage is a place full of dangerous objects – from tools to paint pots, White Spirit to sporting equipment. Without properly locking and storing these objects away, we are in effect exposing all the family to the many risks these post."

He said that liquids that are not labelled properly and tools that are not locked away "could spell disaster".

Mr Broom said that homeowners seem to forget the garage and often use it as a "dumping ground".

He added: "Now it's time to take some action, and tidy up to create a cleaner and safer environment, who knows you may even find some room to park the car!"

Garage Safety Week will run from May 14th to 20th.
