Leaving packaging outside a house can act to reveal its contents to burglars, homeowners have been warned.
Research conducted by website YouGov earlier this year showed that 16.35 million people advertise the contents of their homes by leaving clues for burglars outside.
A bi-weekly rubbish and recycling collection facility is also contributing in driving this trend.
'People need to look at how they are disposing and recycling, particularly with electrical goods,' said a spokesman for Liverpool Victoria.
'People may be picking your waste up. In places like Hull, which have experienced flooding, people have had their discarded goods, which they have placed in skips, taken away before the council can dispose of them,' he added.
Homeowners were advised to dispose of the more expensive items as discreetly as possible.
Although
home insurance will cover for contents, there are limits, and the purchase of too many new expensive items could breach the limits of cover.
