The country's homes will undergo a green transformation over the next decade in order to meet CO2 targets, according to Whatgreenhome.com.

The new plans include pay-as-you-save green loans, which will cover the up-front cost of expensive eco upgrades - such as the installation of solar panels - to show people how their homes can be more environmentally friendly.

Gordon Miller, founder of whatgreenhome.com, believes initiatives like this are vital if the UK is to meet its goal of cutting CO2 by 80 per cent by 2050.

"Clearly, retrofitting and bringing the existing homes up to speed is absolutely critical if we are going to meet our own emissions targets and reduce CO2 emissions," he said.

The new strategy could also be good for job creation, with up to 65,000 jobs required in the green homes industry as a result, in areas such as installing and manufacturing energy saving technology or providing home energy advice.
