The Honda F1 team has made a remarkable break from the typical advertisements that adorn the championship's cars.

The team's cars will this season be covered with an image of the earth in the hope of raising awareness regarding environmental issues.

In doing so, the company has forgone an estimated £50 million in potential advertising.

However, according to the Mirror, the vehicle uses a gallon of petrol every five miles, John Kingston, the environment manager at Honda (UK), that it is the message that is important.

"We're not saying F1 is 'green'," he explained, "but the fans can really make a difference."

Mr Kingston added: "If just one per cent of the people who watch Formula 1 were to change one light bulb for an energy saving one, this would save 38,000 tonnes of CO2 – the same amount of carbon emissions produced by the Honda Racing F1 team over three seasons."
