The summer months are likely to bring about an increase in the number of
pet insurance claims, according to an industry expert.
A spokesman for Tesco said that the summer will see more dog owners taking their pets out for walks in the sun, however, they could be put at an increased risk of getting things stuck in their throats and swallowing "foreign bodies".
Monica McCormack said that the early arrival of hot weather last year caused a rise in pet insurance claims of around six per cent between May and June.
"Because they're out and about more there are things that we'll see more of," Ms McCormack said.
"These can be bites, vomiting, foreign bodies that they have in their ears or have swallowed."
Giving further advice to cat owners, she said: "Cats with white or sparse ear tips are prone to certain types of cancer, so you need to use a sunscreen on their ear tips to stop them getting sunburnt."
