UK travellers have encountered increased hotel rates this summer, according to new research by HRG UK.

A provider of corporate services such as travel management, the company tracked the expenditure of its UK clients as well as industry figures.

The city of Mumbai in India saw the largest increase of all cities with a 49 per cent year-on-year growth in hotel room rent prices when comparing the first half of 2007 with the previous year.

Average daily rates in Mumbai also increased significantly, by 30 per cent.

But even popular European cities that have received UK travellers for years showed substantial increases, with rates in Barcelona being up 18 per cent, for example - a rise similar to that of Berlin's 17 per cent.

The comparative strength of the British pound is clearly having an effect on tourism in America, as US cities also showed some increase.

New York rates were up slightly by four per cent and Houston was part of the top ten with an eight per cent growth in room rates.
