The majority of Britons think that tourism industry companies and hotels should do their bit to help the environment, according to a new study.

Research conducted by Travelodge found that 90 per cent of the 2,000 respondents thought it was these organisations' responsibility to limit the damage they cause to the environment.

Some 54 per cent said they wanted to offset the carbon emissions from upcoming hotel stays.

More than two thirds said they were prepared to go on holiday in the UK by train rather than drive, if it would mean hotel costs were cheaper.

Chief operating officer at Travelodge Guy Parsons said: "Consumers are beginning to accept that our leisure choices can impact the environment we live in.

"The positive news is that they are prepared to change the way they holiday."

The survey was conducted as part of British Tourism Week.
