Many households are at risk of running into money trouble by not ensuring that their homes are protected against winter weather, it has emerged.

New research by home insurance provider Cornhill Direct has suggested that almost half (43 per cent) of people have no protective lagging around their water pipes and one in ten people do not know the location of their stopcock in the event of pipe bursting.

These figures may prove even more disconcerting with the revelation by the insurer that the cost of a burst pipe can reach £3,500.

Spokesperson for the firm Simon Coughlin comments: "Before it gets too cold, people should inspect their pipes for cracks, leaks or other damage. Learn where the stopcock is so you can limit water damage if a pipe bursts."

The Fair Investment Company recently advised householders to carry out repairs on their property to make them more energy efficient before winter.
