As has been much publicised this year, snowfall on the Alps has been weaker than usual prompting fears of global warming, but this new warmer weather is beginning to breed new types of winter sports.

One such example is Kitestyle, which requires competitors to surf icy lakes with a kite attached to their back: it's basically water skiing on ice.

The sport is becoming very popular on the continent and its notoriety has reached such levels that an international competition has been organised in Switzerland.

Due to take place between March 2nd and 4th this year on the frozen Silvaplana Lake in St Moritz, the Snowkite Event 2007 welcomes fans of the sport from all over the world to show what they have got to offer on the ice.

St Moritz is one of the Alps' top tourist destinations and hosts the widest array of winter sports imaginable. Snow polo, cricket and golf have recently been added to the resort's adventure sport range and it is often frequented by celebrities.
