The recent near collapse of the Icelandic banking sector spelt near disaster for the country but could actually put travellers looking for a low-cost break at an advantage, it has been claimed.
Business Week reports that while Icelanders may "face a difficult future" the troubles have given tourists and an opportunity to visit the country for less because of the weak krona.
Once rated as the world's most expensive country by the Economist, Iceland is now seeing 150 krona worth just one euro (79p) - meaning the tourism industry is now advertising the country as a bargain bucket destination.
According to the report, a pint of beer which would usually set tourists back by around 7 can now be bought for about 2 and hostels can be booked from as little as 6 per night.
Operator Iceland Total is offering a number of discounted holidays including a reduced price Glacier, Geysers and Waterfalls break.
