A staff writer at a leading travel website has advised holidaymakers to not underestimate the importance of purchasing travel insurance before they head abroad.

Writing for SmarterTravel.com, Erica Silverstein admitted that she disregarded her own best advice and neglected to purchase travel insurance, relying instead on her youth, health and ability to purchase new clothes in the event of lost baggage.

On a cruise holiday, Ms Silverstein became sick and had to pay a $200 (£100) doctor's bill before electing to fly home early.

"The reality is even young, healthy people can run into problems on the road," she said.

"The cost of travel insurance is small compared to paying out of pocket for emergency medical care, extended hotel stays, and new clothing in a foreign country."

She added that she will certainly purchase travel insurance on future trips and advised her readers to do the same.

Earlier this week, a spokesman for BAA Stansted said that the US is becoming an increasingly popular holiday destinations for Britons as a result of the increased strength of the pound against the dollar.
