Although the use of mobile phones on flights has been cleared by European regulators, no such services are as yet available to UK flyers, the Civil Aviation Authority has explained.

The group explained that the use of all electronic devices onboard aircraft is strictly monitored, researched and regulated.

Press office Richard Taylor explained that there was particular concern about the use of mobile phones onboard as they have been found to affect navigation and radar signalling, potentially putting passenger safety in jeopardy.

"While certain mobile phone systems have been cleared for use by the European Aviation Safety Agency [the body responsible for air safety in the EU] none are currently operational on UK aircraft," he said.

Meanwhile, Ryanair has recently fitted a number of its planes with miniature phone masts to make such services available to some passengers.

During an initial period, O2 and 3 customers would be able to send and receive text messages while in flight.
