New research has suggested that more than eight out of ten drivers (84 per cent) are unaware that loud music in cars contravenes new road safety rules.

Eating while behind the wheel also breaches rules in the most recent version of the Highway Code, Churchill Car Insurance has stated.

Some 65 per cent of respondents indicated that they have eaten while driving.

Abi Clark, Spokesperson for Churchill Car Insurance, commented: "Anything that distracts motorists from looking at the road, or prevents them from driving safely should be avoided at all costs so that unnecessary accidents can be prevented."

Recent research by esure indicated that some 45 per cent of drivers who smoke will disregard new road rules that identify smoking at the wheel as a dangerous activity.
