Following Chancellor Alistair Darling's budget report, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has advised that it is more important than ever that those struggling with their finances protect themselves with adequate insurance.

The organisation states that the budget alterations respond to an economic climate in which everyone is tightening their belts, adding that for those struggling with debt, being underinsured could prove disastrous.

"As well as a grim Budget today we have grim weather too. The incidence of extreme weather is increasing. Flooded homes are becoming commonplace," said Stephen Haddrill, director general of the ABI, highlighting the need for robust home insurance cover.

Directline has also recently advised homeowners that it is now increasingly important to insure the contents of the home in light of the storms that have affected much of mainland Britain.

It advises homeowners affected by the severe weather to make sure the electricity supply to the house is turned off until the premises have been checked by a certified engineer.

InsureandGo offers home insurance policies to protect the home and its contents.
