It is "absolutely critical" for consumers to ensure that they have adequate home insurance, according to the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba).

Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at Biba, stated in recent days that three-quarters of people have contents cover.

He added that while this is a fairly large percentage, this still means that 25 per cent of consumers do not have a policy in place.

"It's absolutely critical. Insurance premiums for buildings and contents insurance have hardly changed in the last ten years - they are very low, they are great value for money and it's really competitive out there at the moment," Mr Trudgill explained.

He advised all consumers to get in touch with a broker to get a quote if they do not have any cover for their property.

According to the Association of British Insurers, the UK insurance industry paid out £9 million in 2006.

People shopping around for home insurance may well find that InsureandGo is able to provide a great deal on a policy.
