Travel insurance should not be considered a luxury and is essential for all travellers, insurance company InsureandGo commented today.

"Travelling without insurance simply isn't worth the risk and we hope that there is no excuse for not getting round to it," said a spokesperson for the company.

The comments came in response to new research from Sainsbury's bank that showed that the habit of travelling abroad without insurance is a growing issue.

The increasing popularity of cheap flights and last minute booking through the internet have been leading drivers in travellers foregoing taking out travel insurance, InsureandGo argued.

"Up to 8.8 million people (18 per cent of the adult population) will have booked a last minute deal around two weeks or less before they travel in order to save money. However, nearly one in five (19 per cent) will not have bought travel insurance," the spokesperson added.

The travel insurance experts urged travellers to get covered before they leave and not to consider it a luxury, or let their busy lives get in the way.
