The internet has encouraged people to discover more about domestic travel opportunities, one expert has commented.
According to travel journalist Russell Amerasekera, the rise of social networking sites has allowed people to share information on the best destinations, galleries, restaurants and bars.
He went on to claim that because of this, British travellers are becoming more adventurous and experimental when it comes to exploring their home turf.
"All of a sudden people have woken up to the multitude of things you can do in these places and perhaps they didn't know about before the internet enabled people to exchange information," Mr Amerasekera claimed.
Meanwhile, Dave Hodgson, marketing director from Marketing Birmingham, urged people to carry out thorough research when planning a UK break to make the most of their time away from home.
Recent research by Visit Birmingham has shown that the majority of people (63 per cent) would choose to travel by car when planning a domestic holiday.
