Around half of those in the UK who use the internet for shopping are concerned about the safety of their details and the risk of falling victim to fraud or identity theft.
Figures from 6,000 people surveyed by online payment provider PayPal show that while people may be wary of the risks associated with shopping online many still enjoy the benefits and ease of the web, with 81 per cent of people in the UK using internet banking.
Almost half of those surveyed said they felt that the online banking service they used was very secure, with 14 per cent saying they thought that sorting out their finances online was safer than offline.
People who regularly use the internet for important tasks such as online banking might want to consider taking out a
computer insurancepolicy in case of unexpected events which could leave them offline.
HSBC was recently voted the best provider of consumer internet banking at the World's Best Internet Bank 2008 awards.
