People may purchase computer insurance to make sure they are protected against any damage to a machine - but many users are not looking after themselves online, it has been claimed.

According to GetSafeOnline.org, internet users are exposing themselves to unnecessary risks online by posting the sort of details "they wouldn't share at the bus stop".

Managing director at the security awareness website Tony Neate said that while many people are concerned about their identity and online privacy, people are literally "giving away" sensitive information.

According to research from technology marketing firm Vanson Bourne, it is the UK's young people in full time education who are putting themselves most at risk of online fraud.

In total, 30 per cent of those surveyed said they thought security software is unimportant, with 19 per cent admitting to posting details such as their date of birth or home address on sites such as Facebook.
