Iran is planning a female-only island in a province in its north-west in a bid to boost tourism among Muslim women, according to local reports.

Since the Islamic Revolution of 1979, Iran has been under strict Islamic law which prevents men and women mixing in public and so women are often deprived the chance to get away on holiday.

A local official told Iran's Tehran-e Emrouz newspaper: "There will be no men on the Arezou Island. Public transport, restaurants and other facilities will be staffed only by women," reports Reuters.

Iran has a rich history and has been the site of many empires and civilisations since 1,000 BC. One of the country's most startling architectural delights is Persepolis which was the cultural centre of both the Achaemenian and Persian Empires.

The site comprises a huge complex of palaces, tombs and winding alleyways that was burnt down by Alexander the Great in 331 BC but since restored to its former glory.

Due to its treacherous terrain, Iran is ideal for extreme desert and mountain tours. Intrepid adventurous are increasingly partaking in desert trekking, where they have to endure days of little water and sleep, an ever changing landscape due to swirling winds before coming to the occasional blissful oasis.
