Figures from the Central Statistics Office in Ireland show that people are spending more money on foreign travel and less on domestic trips.

The number of domestic trips taken by Irish citizens fell by 5.8 per cent in the second quarter of this year when compared with the same period of time in 2007.

Total spend on international travel topped €1,799.2 million (£1.4 million) between April and June with the amount of money spent on business trips up by 16 per cent.

Money going on trips away to visit friends and family also saw a rise from last year, with people in Ireland spending over a quarter more than they used to pay loved ones a visit.

The data shows that the total amount of nights which people spent away from home had dropped by almost nine per cent.

Whether jetting off to exotic climes or staying closer to home, it is important to ensure that you have the right level of travel insurancebefore you go on a trip.
