Pet Care Trust has called into question whether pet ownership in the UK is still really for everyone.

Janet Nunn, chief executive of Pet Care Trust, has said that growing costs for pet ownership and the treatment of sick animals could mean that in a few years' time families and individuals in lower income brackets could be unable to afford owning an animal.

"Are the changes we're seeing since the introduction of new animal welfare laws in Britain in 2006 really just further improvements in the nature of pet keeping here? Or will pet ownership become marginalised," Ms Nunn commented.

Meanwhile, figures compiled by Datamonitor recently showed that the amount of pet insurance being taken out by Britons has increased dramatically in the last three years.

In 2006, UK pet owners spent £360 million on cover; however, the organisation has forecast that this figure will reach £600 million by 2011.
