A "health island" planned to be created off the coast of Bahrain will become a hub for health tourism, it has been claimed.

Features of the $1.6 billion (£775 million) development will include alternative medicine centres, a nutrition and diabetes facility, an aesthetic surgery service, luxury spas, hotels and residential property.

A total of three five-star hotels will be constructed around French, Chinese and Thai themes, each of which will include villas and suites, while a Turkish-style four-star hotel will comprise 110 rooms.

Expected to cover 1.25 million sq m, the island will be divided into sections, with each one focusing on a different aspect of health and care.

The island is planned to be created off the north-east coast of the country, according to Trade Arabia.

Recently, the Gulf Daily News reported that Bahrain's presence at the World Travel Market successfully promoted the nation as a tourist destination.
