A row has broken out between two islands off the west coast of Ireland as to which one is more deserving of hosting the very first Father Ted festival, scheduled to take place next month.

Inis Mor, the largest of the Aran Islands, is set for a huge influx of tourists with a host of events planned to mark the ninth anniversary of the death of Dermot Morgan, who played Ted in the hit sitcom.

However, rival island Inis Oirr believes it should be hosting the festival as it has stronger ties with the show. It is featured in the opening credits and some of the rural scenes were filmed on the island.

"It's unfair that Inis Mor is cashing in on Father Ted when obviously we have closer links with the show," said a local Bed and Breakfast owner.

"Fans and tourists would have come here in the past just to view the Plassey shipwreck. Inis Mor is trying to pull a fast one to be honest and we're not very impressed."

The Aran Islands are known for their tranquillity and breathtaking rock structures that make for popular trekking and biking tours.

The more unconventional activities on offer at the Father Ted festival include Ludo Aerobics, Buckeroo Speed Dating, Hide A Nun and Seek as well as a five-a-side football match between priests and nuns.
