The tourism sector in Israel has seen a boost in the past 12 months, with 2007 shaping up to be the second best year ever with regard to visitor numbers.

According to the Jerusalem Post, some 2.3 million people are projected to visit the country by the end of December, which will place 2007 only behind 2000, when 2.41 million people visited Israel.

The website of the tourism ministry - Israel Wonders - also saw twice as many visitors in September as it did in the corresponding month last year.

Established tourist attractions in the country include the Mount of the Beatitudes, Rothschild Boulevard, the Dome of the Rock, the Western Wall and the Museum of the Jewish Diaspora.
