Italy has become the most popular destination with tourists over 55, new research has revealed.
A study by Saga holidays found that the varied culture of Italy, its cuisine and customs were making it a popular destination with older travellers.
The over-55's also found the Mediterranean country an appealing place to live in and get involved in a local culture, such as taking part in cooking classes or being able to learn the language.
'With its fine food, stunning scenery and fantastic range of cultural experiences Italy seems to have stolen a march from its competitors,' said Andrew Goodsell, chief executive of the Saga group.
The publication of Saga's poll could help further boost the country's popularity, which has also become a property hotspot for those looking to retire in the sun.
The two central regions of Tuscany and Umbria are the most popular for those looking to retire in Italy, according to real estate website medpropertyshop.com.
