Sluggish tourism numbers in the summer and fall seasons have led the Jamaican Tourism Minister to promise a late boost, local newspaper the Jamaica Gleaner News has reported.

Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett only assumed his responsibilities last week and immediately had to address a group of tourism stakeholders at a reception at the Silent Waters Villa in Great River, Montego Bay on Saturday.

He promised a full marketing programme from the Jamaica Tourism Board (JTB) to be drafted within two weeks and that would help increase visitor numbers for the rest of the year.

Mr Bartlett argued visitor numbers had been slow during the fall and summer seasons and a late push could help industry numbers for 2007.

And according to the Gleaner, many of the stakeholders present argued not enough funding was being given to tourism by the Jamaican government.

Minister of finance Audley Shaw had already been told 'that at a very early date we would be coming to seek support for this new marketing thrust,' said Mr Bartlett, referring to a need for late investment.
