The back-to-work blues may not be the only thing people have to worry about as they make the first commute of 2008, according to new research by Green Flag.

A study by the breakdown assistance provider suggests that January 2nd, the first day of work for many people, is the busiest day of the year in terms of car breakdowns.

Abi Clark, spokesperson for the firm, states that cold, wet weather contributes to the likelihood of vehicles not working in winter.

"Batteries fail more often in these conditions and the increased use of de-misters, heaters and windscreen wipers places an extra strain on them," she adds.

The most common causes for call-outs include non-starts, accidents and problems with the tyres.

Motorists were recently advised by the British Insurance Brokers' Association that they should take extra care when driving during the festive period so that they do not risk having to make a car insurance claim.

Consumers shopping around for a deal on car insurance may find that InsureandGo can offer them a competitively-priced quote.
