The recent spate of cold weather in the UK has put a downer on motorcycle sales at the start of 2010, new figures have shown.

Statistics from the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI) revealed year-on-year sales were 42 per cent down in January 2010, compared to the same month in 2009, although the organisation was keen to point out the benefits of personal transport for commuters and the fact motorcycles provide a cost-effective transport solution for Brits.

The top-selling models in the month were the Honda CBF 125 M and the Yamaha YBR 125.

Steve Kenward, chief execurtive officer of MCI, said: "The new sales figures demonstrate how critical it is for the government to create a level playing field across the entire automotive sector, a point discussed at the recent meeting with MP Ian Lucas."

Elsewhere, motorcycle manufacturer Honda recently dominated this year's Motor Cycle News survey. Its 2003 Honda CBR600RR was voted the best for build quality with a rating of 93 per cent, while the CBR1100XX Super Blackbird 1997 to present models were voted the best sports-tourer bikes.
