Brits looking for an inexpensive holiday might not automatically think about taking out
travel insurance and jetting off to Japan, but the country is not as expensive as many people believe, it has been claimed.
Reiko Tani, director for City Sales at the Tourism Division in the Bureau of Industrial and Labour Affairs of Tokyo Metropolitan Government, said many English visitors are under the illusion that Japan is extremely expensive, but this is simply not the case.
She commented: "If you need to ride on the metro in Tokyo it is starting from only £1. We have lunch for around £6 or £7. The price of an overnight stay is also not so expensive."
According to figures from the Japan National Tourism Organisation, 6.7 million foreign visitors arrived in Japan last year. Of this number, 181,400 were from the UK.
The Post Office Worldwide Holiday Costs Barometer placed Japan at ninth in terms of expense, with Hungary proving to be the cheapest place to visit and Brazil the most expensive.
