The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan has experienced a steady increase in tourism over recent years, it has been reported.

According to the Journal Chretien, statistics from the Jordan ministry of tourism indicated growth in the sector rose by 6.4 per cent for the first eight months of this year compared to the same period in 2006.

Jordan Tourism Board (JTB) deputy managing director Fayez Khoury told the publication: "The extensive marketing efforts and activities exerted over the past year have panned out positively for the industry so far."

According to JTB, major attractions in the country include the Dead Sea, the ancient city of Jerash and the city of Petra, which is carved into a sheer rock face.
