The Baikonur Cosmodrome has been opened to the public and expects to achieve its own tourist boom, it has been reported.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the facility - that has previously been used to launch space tourists to the International Space Station - currently attracts some 100 foreign tourists each year and is "a far cry" from attractions such as Cape Canaveral in Florida.

Visitors to the facility can view a mock-up of the Buran spacecraft - a version of the US space shuttle - and the cottage once lived in by Sergei Korolyov, the man behind the launch of the first man in space, Yuri Gagarin.

Mr Gagarin orbited the Earth for 108 minutes on April 12th 1961 in the spaceship Vostock 1, according to Russian Archives Online.

Adventurous travellers wishing to visit such attractions may wish to take advantage of activity holiday insurance from InsureandGo, which covers a range of exhilarating pursuits.
