A home insulation scheme in Kirklees has been given the Ashden Award for excellence in the field of sustainability.

Carrying out home insulation work could be a popular choice with Britons looking to save money and make their property greener.

But they may find that not checking with their home insurance provider if their policy covers such work could result in costly consequences if a DIY accident occurs.

Dr Phil Webber, spokesperson for Kirklees council, said that the scheme has helped many people reduce their environmental impact by offering free loft and cavity wall insulation.

He commented: "This sort of work does pick up very well in terms of payback and jobs and fuel poverty and health. There's all sorts of good reasons for doing it."

Mr Webber added that this is just the sort of work that the sustainable development scheme would like to see more of across the UK.

According to Claire Barrett, editor of Grand Designs Magazine, individuals looking to boost the value of their property during the economic downturn would be well advised to take on home improvement projects.

She noted that adding extra space to a home can bring significant returns in the long run.
