The nation's love affair with DIY and home improvement could be coming to an end, according to a new survey.

Research from the Woolwich reveals that nearly half of the survey respondents said they do not like DIY, while 75 per cent said they have had enough of watching makeover and DIY programmes.

It seems that homeowners are just not motivated enough to carry out DIY and have moved towards DFY (Done for You), with reasons cited including a lack of enthusiasm and considering it a chore which takes up their free time.

Around 37 per cent said that they were worried that they might botch up home improvements if they were to do it themselves.

DIY jobs being dropped in favour of DFY chores included the electrics, plumbing, extensions and fitting a new kitchen or bathroom.

"It seems that the phrase 'time is money' applies to the UK's new DFYers. People think their own time is precious and with the added concern that they are not going to do a good job, people are increasingly turning to experts to get the job done," said Andy Gray, head of mortgages at the Woolwich.

"Home improvements can make a tangible difference to the value of people's homes, but a bad standard of work can drag the price down. Savvy buyers can often see through botched DIY jobs, meaning that sellers will either need to drop the price or employ an expert to re-do the task."
