The number of tourists heading for the Lake District on holiday this year has risen sharply despite fears over the economy, according to reports.

Many British consumers are thought to be cutting back as the prospect of a recession looms but GoLakes.com reports that bookings made on its site has increased by close to 40 per cent from 12 months ago.

The Lake District has long been a draw for tourists from around the world and local operators are confident that the area can tap into a desire for more sustainable travelling, reports the North-West evening Mail.

Chief executive of GoLakes.com Ian Stephens said: "Over Easter our Cumbria accommodation booking service team saw much of the self-catering accommodation around the county fully booked and the same is predicted for the May Bank Holidays."

Meanwhile, the Stone Cottage in Lake District hamlet of Deepdale was recently given a gold award in the Self Catering Holidays of the Year category at the Enjoy England Awards for Excellence.

Before going away on holiday it is always a good idea to get a good deal on your travel insurance with InsureandGo.
