Careless attitudes toward
home insurance may explain the current shortfall in
home insurance protection, Norwich Union states.
Alison Palmer, household underwriting consultant for the firm, said that a number of people do not take
home insurance seriously enough.
She stated: "A lot of people just take the view that 'well, it'll never happen to me. I'll be alright.'
"The events that happened last summer [show] it can happen easily. People lose everything and it's a horrible thing."
Current estimates put the number of people without
home insurance cover in the UK at around 25 per cent, a figure that Ms Palmer validated.
According to Legal & General, kitchens often contain some of the most expensive household items, as well as a number of important documents.
The UK industry paid out around £9 million to householders for property damage or loss of possessions in 2006.
InsureandGo offers a range of
home insurance policies to protect the structure and contents of a property.
