Taking out legal cover as part of a home insurance policy can help to avoid costly court or conciliation fees if homeowners are involved in a dispute with a neighbour, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has suggested.

Kelly Ostler-Coyle, spokesperson for the organisation, said that with a rising number of people involved in neighbourly disputes, taking out additional legal cover may be a prudent choice for those who would be unable to meet costs of resolution.

"The thing with insurance is you never know if you need it till you need it, so it's always there to protect against the unexpected. Legal expenses can be very pricey," she asserted.

She added that while many people hope such circumstances will not occur, considering cover for these and other eventualities is an important aspect of protecting homes and families.

A recent study by Allianz Insurance has suggested that more than 1.1 million households have argued with their neighbours about noise.

InsureandGo offers home insurance cover that protects property and its contents from unforeseeable circumstances.
