The scent of lemon in a female motorist's car can help her drive more safely, according to a new scientific study.

Research conducted at Middlesex University found that the citrus smell improves female drivers' concentration, thus reducing the chances of dangerous driving.

However, drivers get accustomed to a smell after a certain time, leading researchers to believe that an intermittent injection of the smell would help female drivers the most as it would help to keep them alert.

Neil Martin, a researcher at the university, told the British Psychological Society: "The results show that drivers dangling air fresheners may do more than scent a car.

"They might, unwittingly, improve aspects of driving."
