The increase in the number of flights from London to Newquay is set to boost Cornwall's visitor numbers, according to tourism industry experts.

British Airways has launched a new daily service between the two UK destinations, which is expected to boost tourism in the popular holiday hotspot.

Inbound tourism currently accounts for 25 per cent of the Cornish economy.

Andrew Mitchell, economic portfolio holder for the local council, said: "The airport is very important for the local economy, connecting Cornish businesses to the UK and providing convenient affordable transport."

Last year, Cornwall was voted the nation's favourite holiday destination at the annual British Travel Awards.

"With so much to offer, Cornwall is an ideal holiday destination in the UK which really does have something for everyone," commented regular visitor Jeremy Greaves of EADS in central London.

"The news of even more flights from London is very welcome. Travelling to Cornwall from the Home Counties by car regularly takes upwards of five hours, but flying takes away all that road congestion and makes Cornwall a realistic weekend destination too."
