A new study has found that two-thirds of lone drivers on Britain's roads would be scared in the event of a breakdown.
The survey by Britannia Rescue found that despite this, only a third make preparations to avoid a breakdown before they start their journey.
While more than 90 per cent of women said that they would be scared for their safety if they broke down alone at night, nearly half of all men also stated that they would be concerned for their wellbeing.
Some respondents stated that because of this, they would not want a passing motorist to assist them with the problem.
Andrew Beard, spokesperson for Britannia Rescue, said It's a sad reflection of today's society that many motorists would feel nervous if they broke down and someone stopped to help, despite honest intentions."
The AA advises people to check their vehicles to reduce the risk of breakdown, with tyres, engine oil, water levels and lights all particularly important factors to consider.
