Those people travelling overseas alone should be sure to read up on their destination and "think local" in their activities, it has been advised.

Knowledge of local customs and cultures can prove invaluable to unaccompanied travellers as it can help them to deal more effectively with situations that may arise, advises Kristina Pentland of online travel advisory service Responsibletravel.com.

She added that tourists should leave messages with other travellers as to their whereabouts to ensure security.

"You should also book just a few places to stay at the start of your trip - this will give you a base and some time from which to get orientated," Ms Pentland commented.

She added that by taking these basic steps travellers can make the most of their trip and have fun on their holidays, adding that in respecting local culture and traditions, tourists will earn respect and enhance their travel experience.

Responsibletravel.com has recently released research suggesting that a greater number of women are opting to travel alone.
