Long-distance drivers are foregoing taking the necessary rests to ensure safety during lengthy journeys, Sky News has reported.

A survey by the AA has revealed that as many as five per cent of long distance drivers take no rests at all during their journeys, with almost a quarter reporting that they only take a quick toilet break.

Close to 45 per cent of drivers are ready to drive through the night when on a long distance trip, the survey further revealed.

And the lack of rest during travel takes its toll – ten per cent of those polled admitted having nodded off at the wheel at some point, with just under 30 per cent saying they had continued driving even when tired.

The need to reach a destination quickly is one of the leading reasons why long-distance drivers take risks with fatigue.

According to the AA, more than 3,000 deaths and serious injuries on UK roads each year are attributed to sleep deprivation.
