British holidaymakers travelling to Spain could soon face major delays as airports in the popular country are implementing new security measures.

Travellers will now have to bring along further identification documents as Spain moves to a US-style airport security requirement.

Passengers visiting Spain will all have to provide Advance Passenger Information (API) – which includes information such as date of birth and passport number - in order to be assured they will be allowed on the flight.

These new regulations will be implemented from June 13th.

Despite the heightened security methods sure to make air travel safer, they could cause long queues and flight delays.

In order to save time at the check-in desk, British Airways has advised its passengers to fill out an API form online before hitting the airport.

"Staff at check-in desks will also be able to collect API data but passengers are strongly advised to supply the information prior to arrival at the airport, or at a self service kiosk where available, to avoid unnecessary delays," a statement from the airline said.

Spain is also the most popular holiday destination among Britons, which could add to the severity of the delays.
