Brits planning a holiday should check their cover for holiday luggage even if they are holidaying in the UK experts have warned.

Legal & General calculated that the average value of luggage and contents of a family of four could be as much as £3,000, with the value of a weekend bag for one person as much as £1,300.

Elaine Parkes, head of technical services at Legal & General's general insurance business said: "It's surprising just how quickly the value of the contents of our luggage adds up."

She went on to point out that the cost of the actual bag or case itself should be considered, and advises travellers to keep documents to do with luggage cover in their hand luggage so that if cases are lost they have details of who to contact straightaway.

Figures from Insureandgo suggest that Londoners seem to be the biggest luggage-losers, with 17% of them reporting a loss over the last two years. This is followed people from the North West with 14%. East Anglians have lost the least baggage but one in 20 said they had some lost luggage from an airport during the same period.

According to the BBC, camping holidays are enjoying a rise in popularity this year, as many people feel the financial pinch.

Dave Parsons, chief executive of website campsites.co.uk told the BBC he had seen an "unprecedented" rise in bookings over the last 12 months.
