The Motorcycle Industry Association (MCI) has called for new secretary of state for transport Lord Adonis to make amendments to the new two-part motorcycle test.

Anyone riding a motorcycle should remember to have motorcycle insurance in place prior to heading out on the open road.

It is hoped that consultation on the European Third Directive on Driving Licences (3DLD) - which is due to be implemented in 2013 - will lead to improvements in the way that the motorcycle test is currently carried out.

MCI spokesperson Sheila Rainger said: "Evidence shows that testing alone will not produce safer, more competent riders. 3DLD is an opportunity to put a training-based licensing system in place that will genuinely cut rider casualties and improve road safety."

Meanwhile, the MCI is currently promoting National Motorcycle Week which is to take place next month (July 12th-18th) in a bid to publicise bike ownership as an interesting pastime.

The organisation noted that the week is an opportunity for enthusiasts across the country to get together and share their love of biking.

InsureandGo offers motorcycle insurance for those looking to travel by bike.
