The tragedy of the Rhyl Cycling Club has prompted MPs to meet to discuss possible legislation changes to prevent similar accidents from happening again.

Four members of the Rhyl Cycling Club, including one as young as 14, died in January of this year when a car skidded on ice and crashed into them.

Vale of Clwyd MP Chris Ruane has secured a debate on the issue, to call for possible changes in the law that would treat icy roads in the same way as those affected by chemical spills.

Principal roads would also be gritted and closed in order to make them safe during icy weather.

According to Mr Ruane in comments made to the BBC there had already been four accidents that morning due to lack of stringent safety procedures.

'If an oil spillage had occurred, the road would be cordoned off: this would be standard procedure,' he said, referring to his proposed changes to the law.

A lack of communication by authorities on road gritting will be addressed, as the situation of the road in the Denbighshire-Conwy county border might have been one reason for the lack of coordination.

Protocols were especially important in Wales which has a plurality of small local authorities, argued Mr Ruane.

Be careful on the roads during icy weather, and make sure you are covered with the right car insurance. Call or check online for great value deals from InsureandGo.
