The tourism sector of Macau grew rapidly during the last 12 months, according to the government of the special administrative region.

Chui Sai On, secretary for social affairs and culture, said that over 27 million visitors entered the region during 2007, an increase of more nearly a quarter (22.7 per cent) on 2006.

According to news agency Xinhua, Mr Chui added that the government will continue to develop more tourism brands within the region to continue the growth.

He continued to note that events such as Macau International Fireworks Display Content and its grand prix contributed to the region's image.

Last year, the tourism authorities of Macau, Hong Kong and Guangdong elected to intensify joint promotions to establish a global tourism brand for the three cities.

Established tourism destinations in the region include Fisherman's Wharf and the theme park Vulcania.
